Junior Counselor - (Only in CT, MN, WA, & WV)

In addition to the qualifications we seek in all volunteers, as outlined on the Volunteer page, the Junior Counselor role has its own set of parameters:

General Responsibility
Assist cabin counselors or activity counselors in their duties

Specific Responsibilities

  • Work under direction of Camp Director and designated staff as part of camp team
  • If living in cabin - Assist cabin counselors in supervising all assigned aspects of the campers' day, including wake-up, cabin clean-up, meal times, rest times, getting ready for bed, and nighttime supervision, or assist activity specialists in the coordination of assigned activities
  • If working in activity area - Assist activity specialists in the coordination of assigned activities
  • Serve as a good example in personal language, behavior, appearance, rest, and health habits

Essential Functions

  • Ability to assist cabin counselors or activity specialists with campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury)
  • Ability to assist in maintaining constant supervision of campers when on-duty
  • Ability to assist in observing camper behavior, assessing its appropriateness and applying appropriate behavior-management techniques as directed
  • Ability to assist cabin counselors in identifying and responding to environmental and other hazards related to the cabin group

Specific Qualifications

  • 18 years of age and high school graduate or equivalent 
  • Experience working with young people
  • Ability to put others' needs before own
  • Strong work ethic
  • Good character/ability to make difficult decisions in the face of adversity
  • Ability to relate to adults of all ages, as well as to children
  • Flexibility and ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Good communication skills
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults with IBD in a camp setting
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications helpful
  • Be physically able to stand for extended periods of time, walk long distances, carry equipment/supplies, etc., often times in inclement weather
