Treatment Decisions

Shared Decision Making

No Decision about You, Without You Since everyone’s disease is different, the “best” decision is the one that meets YOUR needs. It is important that you and your healthcare provider work TOGETHER to find a treatment plan that is right for you. While your provider may know what’s going on inside your gut, they may not know what’s going on inside your head. So, when discussing treatment options with your provider, be sure to:

  1. Review all treatment options, as well as their benefits and risks
  2. Think through which medications align best with your personal treatment goals and preferences
  3. Speak up - let your provider know your preferences and what’s most important to you and your family
  4. Review your preferences with your provider
  5. Together, work with your provider to apply your preferences to your decision

When you and your provider work TOGETHER to make a choice about your care that aligns with YOUR personal goals and preferences it is called shared decision making. It is only when you are involved in the decision making process that you can make the best choice for you.

Picking a medication is not easy – there are lots of things to consider. In addition to talking with your healthcare provider, there are tools available that can help you learn more about medications and compare your options, like the ones below.

Are You Considering an Anti-TNF Medication or an Immunomodulator? If so, we may be able to help you with your decision.

EmmiDecide is a suite of online tools designed to improve decision making and help create more meaningful conversations between you and your provider. It explains how IBD can progress and how it impacts the digestive system. It then goes over the pros and cons of different medications, and asks you questions along the way. The questions are designed to help you weigh your options so that you can talk with your provider about medications you’d like to consider. Your preferences are captured using an interactive checklist, which can be printed at the end of the program.

Here is a list of tools we have available for you, and the information that’s covered in each program:

  1. Crohn’s Disease: Treatment Options
    • What Crohn’s disease is, and how it affects the body over time
    • Pros and cons of immunomodulators, anti-TNF medications, and combination therapy
  2. Ulcerative Colitis: Treatment Options
    • What ulcerative colitis is, and how it affects the body over time
    • Pros and cons of medications and surgical options
    • Common questions, including special diets and smoking
  3. Treatment Options for Pediatric Crohn’s: A Guide for Patients and Families
