Introducing 2026 Rising Healthcare Leader Kristin Burke, MD, MPH

For Dr. Kristin Burke, caring for people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is both a profession and a personal calling. As an IBD physician at Massachusetts General Hospital for the past seven years, she has dedicated her career to helping patients achieve healthier, fuller lives. Her commitment to the field began in childhood after her father was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, an experience that inspired her interest in understanding IBD and advancing treatment options for future generations of patients. Dr. Burke's research focuses on leveraging large-scale epidemiologic and translational studies to advance understanding of the pathogenesis, treatment outcomes, and personalized management of inflammatory bowel diseases and microscopic colitis. Her work aims to strengthen precision medicine approaches and improve patient outcomes through more individualized care strategies. Additionally, she serves as the Medical Director of Quality for Gastroenterology at the Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women’s, and Faulkner Hospitals. In this role, she leads initiatives to enhance quality, safety, and consistency of care, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of treatment throughout the healthcare system. She also co-leads initiatives focused on improving infusion quality, access, and convenience for patients across the Mass General Brigham system.

Dr. Burke is particularly passionate about developing and implementing evidence-based therapeutic pathways that drive meaningful, long-term outcomes for patients with IBD. She values the opportunity to partner with patients throughout every stage of their disease journey, providing ongoing support and adapting treatment plans as their needs evolve over time. “There is nothing more important to me than treating my patients so that they can live full quality lives and pursue their own passions without restriction,” she says.

Beyond caring for patients, Dr. Burke has become a dedicated leader within the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and the IBD community. She has organized the New England Chapter's MyIBD Learning Patient and Caregiver Symposium for the past three years, serves on the Chapter’s Healthcare Professional Committee, leads the Massachusetts General Hospital Take Steps Walk team every year, and moderates national IBD case discussions at Crohn's & Colitis Congress. Through these experiences, she has built lasting relationships with fellow physicians across New England while helping expand education, collaboration, and patient support.

Dr. Burke encourages other healthcare professionals and institutions to become involved with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, emphasizing that it offers valuable opportunities to educate patients, advocate for the IBD community, and come together with experts dedicated to advancing care. She has seen firsthand how the Foundation provides patients with education, peer support, guidance through major life decisions, and resources for navigating treatment and medication access—making it an essential partner in helping individuals thrive while living with IBD.

Being named the Rising Healthcare Leader in IBD is especially meaningful to Dr. Burke because it reflects a full-circle moment representing both her professional journey and the personal experience that drew her to the field. Today, Dr. Burke is driven by her opportunity to, “help patients achieve a quality of life that [her] father and many others could not have imagined years ago.” In her partnership with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, Dr. Burke is honored to play a role in the progress of IBD therapies over the years. To her, “that privilege remains my greatest motivation and the most meaningful measure of success.”
