Mucosal lining
The inner lining of the small intestine.
Nutrients
Substances that the body needs to live and grow, such as vitamins, proteins, fats,
and carbohydrates

Over-the-counter
Medications that can be bought without a prescription.

Parenteral nutrition
Nutritional supplementation method where nutrients and calories are delivered through an IV directly into your veins.

Perforation
A hole, that develops in the wall of the intestine that can be caused by inflammation.
Perianal
Located around the anus.

Pouchitis
Inflammation of the lining of the J-pouch/ Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (formed from the small intestine).
Proctocolectomy
The surgical removal of the colon and rectum. It is often part of the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, or j-pouch, surgeries.
Rectum
The part of the large intestine between the colon and the anus that holds stool before
it is evacuated from the body in a bowel movement.
Remission
The period when inflammation and symptoms from IBD disappear, decrease, or are under control.
