Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion criteria: adults (>18 yo), women of minority/in underserved populations with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or unclassified inflammatory bowel disease interested in participating in the study, understands English or have someone able to translate. Can be receiving care within John Hopkins Medicine or any outside facility.

Exclusion criteria: patients not interested in participating in the study.

Study Details:

A 60 minute telemedicine visit one to one with the IBD specialist; during the visit the IBD specialist will discuss how the IBD impact women at any age of her life. We will address impact of IBD on menses, fertility, sexual life and post-menopause; screening recommendations for patients on IBD therapy, indications and side effects.


Free educational services will also be available upon patient request and appropriateness to their medical condition in relation with IBD.

Description of Treatment (Mechanism of action):

Patient will receive a comprehensive overview of the impact of IBD on different stages of life, screening recommendations during the maintenance therapy with biologics, indication and potential side effects of the medications. As mentioned, this intervention is personalized and may extend to other disciplines if extra-intestinal manifestations are reported. It last 60 minutes, via zoom or other online platforms.

 

Patient Participation Requirements:

Patient will be asked to fill out a 30 questions surveil to assess  knowledge on the effect of IBD on woman health, screening recommendations during maintenance therapy with biologics and immunosuppressant medication.

Possible Risks & Side Effects:

Patient may be uncomfortable to discuss personal aspects of their life or they may get bored. They can stop the zoom meeting anytime.

Progress to Date:

We have enrolled 35 patients in our study. The satisfaction with the educational program was above expectation.
