Dr. Alan Moss

 

This award is presented to the volunteer leader who demonstrates uncommon leadership and has contributed in an indisputable way to the quality of life of Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis patients and families through patient service, professional education, or advocacy activities.

 

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation New England Chapter is thrilled to honor Alan Moss, MD, FACG, AGAF, FRCPI with the 2023 Humanitarian of the Year award. Through research, education, and advocacy, Dr. Moss has committed his professional career to the care of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis for the past 15 years.


Dr. Moss, Director of the Crohn's & Colitis Program at Boston Medical Center and Professor of Medicine the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University, is a clinician-scientist with expertise in management of IBD. His research interests include microbial therapeutics, mucosal immunology, and clinical outcomes. He has received grant funding from NIDDK, AGA, Helmsley Charitable Trust, and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. Dr. Moss has published more than 120 research papers and is currently the Deputy Editor of Crohn's & Colitis 360 (the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s online journal). He has also served on our National Scientific Advisory Committee’s Professional Education Committee.

 

Prior to his tenure at Boston Medical Center and Boston University, Dr. Moss was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an IBD physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) where he was the Director of Translational Research. Dr. Moss also spent time as an Associate Investigator at both Mass General Hospital and MIT. He received his medical education and training in Ireland before coming to the U.S. for fellowship at BIDMC.

 

Dr. Moss joined the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation in September 2023 as Chief Scientific Officer. As CSO, Alan will guide the vision setting and have oversight of the research, education, support, advocacy, and impact efforts of the Foundation, as well as serve as a member of the Foundation’s senior leadership team helping drive important strategy across the organization. Dr. Moss has a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion work; he will bring these passions and skills among many others to his work to the Foundation.
