Accommodations

Having IBD means that sometimes you will need to ask for help. You might miss some school or other activities, and you’ll want to catch up on anything you missed. Sometimes it will mean that you can’t participate in activities like gym class. That’s why it’s important to ask for accommodations. That means asking for your teachers, your coaches, and anyone else that needs to know, to plan ahead for when your IBD becomes a problem.

If your IBD keeps you out of school for a while, your teachers should know ahead of time that when this happens, they will need to give you time to get better and catch up on the work you missed. The school nurse should also know so that if you have a flare at school, you can visit them to get the help you need. If your IBD makes it hard for you to participate in an activity, your teacher should try to find another way for you to be included.

Asking for accommodations can be scary. It can be hard to tell people that you need help. But it’s important for you to have the support that you need to do your best. The more you learn about your IBD, the easier it gets to ask for help because you will know better what you will need.
