Code Words

Sometimes talking about IBD can be complicated. There are lots of medical terms that you might need to learn, and sometimes you’ll be talking about your body in ways that you aren’t always comfortable with. Sometimes you’ll need to discuss your symptoms in public. In situations like that, it can be useful to have code words, or words that make it easier for you to talk about your disease.

For example, you might not always feel comfortable talking about your bowel movements if you are in an area with lots of people, but you still need to share information with your parent or guardian. You can make a plan with them ahead of time to let them know what words you feel comfortable using.

Using code words instead of medical words can also make it easier for you to talk about IBD by using terms you are more familiar with. For example, if you feel more comfortable saying “poop” than “bowel movement,” you can! You should use the words that make it easy for you to talk about your own body and experience.
