Amy's Story

Clinical Trial Story
My journey started 17 years ago with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. I am currently the first and only member of my family who has an autoimmune disease. I struggled with the disease for many years before I found a doctor who told me I did not have to take a steroid to achieve remission. To say that I was relieved is an understatement!

I tried all FDA approved drugs for UC, but I did not respond well to them. I was blessed to have two beautiful boys, each born three years apart; however my body suffered a great deal during each pregnancy and delivery. I decided it was finally time to consider a clinical trial.

I participated in my first clinical trial in 2014, where a drug was being tested as a treatment for IBD. This drug is now approved by the FDA, and although it was nice to feel good again, I only responded well to the drug for eight months. I was very disappointed when I eventually flared. I tried one other clinical trial with a new drug intervention, and I am now currently in remission with this drug.

I have been in remission for three years and living a life of freedom, although I have had some very emotionally and mentally challenging years. I was nervous to participate in clinical trials, yet I knew that it was time to take a leap of faith. One piece of advice for others considering a clinical trial is to find a support system that will take this journey with you.
