Pouchitis
Inflammation of the lining of the J-pouch/ Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (formed from the small intestine).
Pre-Existing Condition
A health problem, like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, a person has before the date their health insurance starts.
Precision medicine
A form of medicine that uses information about a person’s own genes or proteins to prevent, diagnose, or treat disease.
Premium
The amount you pay every month for health insurance.
Prescription Drug Coverage
Health insurance that helps pay for prescription drugs.
Prior Authorization
A term that health insurance plans use which require a provider, clinic, hospital, case manager, or patient to apply for and receive approval for certain health care services. This can also be call pre-authorization, pre-approval, or prior approval.
Proctocolectomy
The surgical removal of the colon and rectum. It is often part of the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, or j-pouch, surgeries.
Rectum
The part of the large intestine between the colon and the anus that holds stool before
it is evacuated from the body in a bowel movement.
Remission
The period when inflammation and symptoms from IBD disappear, decrease, or are under control.
Shared decision making
This is when a healthcare provider and a patient work together to make a healthcare decision that is best for the patient. The optimal decision considers evidence-based information about available options, the provider’s knowledge and experience, and the patient's values and preferences.
