IBD Qorus® — Quality Driven, Care Focused Our two-part mission is to find a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis while doing everything we can to improve the daily quality of life for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). That drive is what powers IBD Qorus®, our groundbreaking collaboration between patients and healthcare providers to streamline and improve the quality of IBD care across the country to ensure all patients get high-quality care, treatment, and outcomes.

Quality of care directly impacts health and treatment outcomes for patients with IBD. Therefore, identifying and improving standards of care will help mitigate risks and preventable complications associated with IBD, which is why IBD Qorus was started.

IBD Qorus leverages the power of a collaborative improvement network by bringing together healthcare teams and patients from IBD care centers across the United States to systematically learn, share, and disseminate improvements in health care delivery. This first-ever adult IBD learning health system focuses on improving how care is delivered to patients by tracking care performance and outcomes using patient-centered metrics.

Patient First, Care Driven

Patients and their providers represent the engine of IBD Qorus with data collected at the point-of-care, and then aggregated with other participating centers. This data drives the IBD Qorus learning health system and fosters continuous process improvement, quality reporting and research.

How this works is simple:

  • Using a web-based electronic platform, participating patients self-report symptoms, well-being, and concerns. This data is integrated into a comprehensive dashboard that is used to inform decision-making and promote the patient-provider co-production of care.
  • The IBD Qorus platform enables patient population management and data analysis; and therefore, participating healthcare providers are empowered to share ideas and report quality metrics using a common platform.
  • Qorus teams compare patient-reported outcomes over time and learn from one another to improve their quality of IBD care delivery.

Quality Improvement Methods

The collection of patient-reported data is not enough to improve. In IBD Qorus, participating centers work to collect data and apply quality improvement methods to make positive change. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) Breakthrough Series (BTS) is one quality improvement method IBD Qorus has used to drive improvement and refinement of IBD care delivery.

Here's how a BTS works:

  • The collaborative BTS model is organized into a series of cycles, with each cycle kicked off by an in-person learning session and then follow-up action periods.
  • During the action period, sites focus on identifying and testing change ideas that might lead to an improvement. Sites share their testing experience, successes, and challenges during monthly collaborative calls.
  • During the in-person learning sessions, practice changes that have produced encouraging results are then harvested and shared with others to influence their efforts or to adopt the practice change. Overall findings are disseminated through presentations and publications to improve the standard quality of care for IBD.

The Promise of IBD Qorus

IBD Qorus is a quality-driven and care-focused initiative that is on its way to improving the care and health outcomes for thousands of IBD patients. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s steadfast commitment to improving patient outcomes necessitates continued expansion and adoption of IBD Qorus throughout the United States. This will help ensure that all patients living with IBD receive the best care possible, and this can only be achieved by a comprehensive initiative such as IBD Qorus.
