Our Research Strategy and Programs

Developing better treatments and working toward cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) requires an intense, multifaceted approach.

At the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, one way we’re advancing the research is through our signature Foundation programs, which are designed to encourage collaboration. We’re also focused on filling crucial gaps in scientific knowledge through our research initiatives.

Investing in Research Initiatives

Our research initiatives are focused on critical gaps in scientific knowledge that need to be answered in order to improve patient quality of life and move us closer to cures. Currently, we are driving initiatives that will help to prevent and treat common IBD complications, including chronic abdominal pain and fibrosis. We’re also investigating genetic and environmental disease triggers and finding new, high-tech ways to make patient lives better.

Signature Foundation Programs

While many other non-profits simply fund research, we actually initiate and directly oversee several research programs that we lead with the help of leading researchers in gastroenterology and other experts in the field. Our signature programs includes:

  • The most robust data-driven IBD research network (IBD Plexus)
  • A nationwide quality-of-care initiative (IBD Qorus)
  • Three large, ongoing longitudinal research studies that are following specific groups of people with IBD [SPARC IBD (adults), CAPTURE IBD (children), and IBD SIRQC (patients undergoing surgery)]

Supporting Top Researchers

Scientific breakthroughs don’t happen without adequate funding. That’s why we’re proud to support both leading and up-and-coming investigators who are tackling some of the most pressing questions in the field today.
