Camp Nurse

In addition to the qualifications we seek in all volunteers, as outlined on the Volunteer page, the Camp Nurse role has its own set of parameters:

General Responsibility
Assist in overseeing the camp's medical operations according to the camp mission, guiding principles, and medical manual; to distribute medication, keep medical records, and assist Camp Physician(s).

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist in staff training related to Health Center, Medical Manual and OSHA requirements
  • Carry out medical procedures as directed by the Medical Director & Camp Physician(s)
  • Prepare and maintain Camp Health Center
  • Properly store and dispense any medicines brought to camp by campers and staff, in accordance with the Camp Medical Manual and with the local state's laws
  • Complete appropriate forms (Incident Reports, Medication Log, etc.) in a timely manner
  • Assist in evaluating the entire camp operation with suggestions for the following season
  • As needed, speak with campers' parents
  • Perform other duties as designated by the Medical Director & Head Nurse

Essential Functions

  • Ability to assist in staff training
  • Ability to help monitor health and safety of camp population
  • Ability to provide care under the instruction of the Medical Director, Head Nurse, & Camp Physician(s)
  • Ability to reach patients on rugged terrain

Specific Qualifications

  • Possess a valid license (or obtain appropriate reciprocity) to work as a nurse in the state in which camp is located
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults with IBD in a camp setting
  • Preferred: Experience with pediatric GI patients or emergency rooms
  • Preferred: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training
