Remembering Dr. J. Marshall Garrett

In 1987, Dr. J. Marshall Garrett, a Birmingham gastroenterologist, joined with Conrad and Frances Cypress to found the Alabama Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. They started by holding support groups for patients and families, providing hope and community to many. We are deeply saddened by Dr. Garrett's passing on June 5, 2020. We are so very grateful for the work he did to improve the lives of IBD patients, both in his clinic and in the community.

The Alabama/Northwest Florida Chapter Executive Director, Emily Richter, says his presence will be greatly missed. "When I started at the Foundation, Dr. Garrett called me to set up a time to come by our office to meet me. He showed up with a full breakfast and spent the morning sharing the history of our chapter and stories from his years of involvement since. He was so proud of the growth and community that formed out of his efforts, and it was easy to tell why he was such a force in our community. I will particularly miss getting a phone call from him every time one of our events appeared on the local news. He was always excited to know what we were working on and new ways we were supporting patients. He was a real champion for our IBD community."

Thank you, Dr. Garrett. You will be missed.
