Volunteering: A Rewarding Experience
Published: March 16, 2022
This is an introduction of myself so you can get to know me a little better. Well, maybe I should say my IBD story! I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 16. I had a 2-stage major j-pouch surgery 8 years later. Unfortunately, I was re-diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease 5 years after that. Despite my IBD and many complications over two decades, I’ve always managed to THRIVE.
However, 19 months ago things went very wrong in my small bowel and wouldn’t let up. This included major disease flare-ups and bowel obstructions. After a major exploratory small bowel surgery in May 2021 in which several mechanical issues were fixed, I was additionally diagnosed with chronic small bowel Dysmotility. This is a condition in which segments of smooth muscle become impaired resulting in changes in the speed, strength, or coordination of peristalsis action (a series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the GI tract).
Being told I have this additional bowel problem was a huge blow to me. Dysmotility in the bowel is difficult to treat with limited medical options. But I remain a strong IBD Warrior, work closely with my GI team, and strongly advocate for myself. And I never give up…ever.
Throughout my IBD journey, I’ve still achieved many of my professional and personal goals! This includes obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree, having a successful Human Resources Management corporate career, getting many articles published in local magazines, marriage, being a mommy to our two adorable Maltese dogs, Tyler and Kaylie, doing lots of traveling for vacation and work, lead singing in local bands, and more.
I’m a passionate IBD patient advocate who has been involved with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation since my original diagnosis including participating in fundraisers, event committees, and attending support groups. In January 2021, I became a Support Group Leader. I love inspiring and helping other patients and their families. I’m now also a regular volunteer feature article writer and content proofreader for the monthly New England Chapter e-newsletter.
My best advice for fellow IBD Warriors — please keep going! There is always help and hope. I suggest contacting the New England Chapter to see how you can get involved. It’s a great way to connect with others who understand what it feels like living with bowel disease, team up with people to participate in fundraiser events, and build new friendships. Volunteering is truly rewarding!
