Patent Reform

Patents give drug companies legal protection to make new medicines. This helps them get back the money they spend on research. But sometimes, it keeps less expensive medications—like generics and biosimilars—from coming out soon enough. That can make it harder for people with IBD to get affordable treatments quickly.

The Foundation is committed to improving access to all FDA-approved IBD drugs. To do this, we need to understand patents clearly as well as encourage patients and caregivers to promote more timely availability of generics and biosimilars.
