How can IBD affect the Hispanic/Latino Community?
The number of people diagnosed with IBD has increased significantly among Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States. Research shows that Hispanic/Latino individuals with IBD may experience unique challenges related to diagnosis, treatment, and disease management. For example, Hispanic/Latino IBD patients may:
- Experience delays in diagnosis, often due to limited access to specialty care or lack of awareness about IBD symptoms.
- Face language barriers that affect communication with healthcare professionals and understanding of treatment plans.
- Encounter cultural stigma or misunderstandings about digestive diseases that may delay seeking care.
The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is committed to supporting patients, caregivers, and families who are a part of the Hispanic/Latino Community by providing you with resources that reflect your experiences, address your needs, and help you thrive.
We recognize that health journeys are shaped by community, culture, and access to care. Our goal is to ensure you have the knowledge, tools, and connection you need to take control of your health and feel supported every step of the way.
Navigating IBD Through Education
Living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be challenging, but knowledge empowers individuals to take an active role in their health and well-being. Through education and support, people living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can better understand their condition, recognize symptoms, explore treatment options, and make informed decisions alongside their healthcare professionals. By understanding the impact of IBD, education becomes a powerful tool for navigating your IBD journey.
The MyIBD Connections programs informs, empowers, and educates individuals from communities that experience IBD differently in terms of diagnosis, symptoms, and access to care and treatments. MyIBD Connections for the Hispanic/Latino Community provides education for this community by hosting in-person sessions and dedicated virtual programs that include culturally relevant information, helpful resources, and community support. The Foundation has given me a voice in research. As a patient reviewer for research grants, I review research proposals and the impact they will have on patients. There are so many more treatment options since I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 15 years ago.
